Ashby AI Screening: How Wonka's Integration Actually Works

Connect Ashby to Wonka in under three minutes. One ATS ID exchange, live candidate sync, AI-ranked shortlists. No CSVs, no field mapping, no manual work.

Wonka's Ashby integration uses a one-time ATS ID handshake to connect the two systems. Once connected, Wonka pulls every job, candidate, and CV from Ashby in real time. You build assessments inside Wonka, share them with the candidates you select, and get AI-ranked results with feedback on every answer. Then you move the best candidates forward in your existing Ashby pipeline. No spreadsheet exports. No duplicate data entry. No engineering work.

Why This Integration Exists

If you're hiring on Ashby, you've already solved the structured-pipeline problem. Ashby is one of the cleanest ATS products on the market — fast, opinionated, and built for teams that take hiring data seriously.

But Ashby is an ATS. It tracks where candidates are. It doesn't tell you which candidates can actually do the job.

Most teams patch that gap with one of three workflows:

  1. Resume review. A human skims a CV, makes a snap judgment, moves the candidate forward or rejects. Fast, but the data is brutal: resumes are weakly correlated with on-the-job performance, and they're a primary vector for unconscious bias.
  2. First-round phone screens. A 30-minute call with a recruiter or hiring manager. Expensive, slow, and tells you almost nothing structured. We've written before about why first-round interviews waste everyone's time.
  3. A separate screening tool, with CSVs. Export candidates from Ashby, upload to the screening platform, run assessments, export scores, paste back into Ashby. Every export is a place where data goes stale or gets lost.

The Ashby × Wonka integration is built to kill option three. The CSV dance was always a workaround. Now it's a setting.

The 30-Second Setup (Connect with ATS ID)

Here's the actual flow, end to end. We've timestamped it against the walkthrough video so you can watch along if you prefer.

Step 1 — Start in Wonka. Sign up at wonka.work and choose Connect with ATS ID. Select Ashby from the list.

Step 2 — Copy the Wonka key. Wonka generates a unique key for your workspace. Copy it.

Step 3 — Paste it into Ashby. Open Ashby's integration settings, find Wonka, enable it, and paste the key.

Step 4 — Copy Ashby's value back. Ashby returns its own value. Paste it back into Wonka.

That's the entire connection. No OAuth scopes to debate with your security team. Two values, one direction each, done.

What Syncs

Once connected, Wonka pulls these from Ashby automatically and keeps them current:

  • Jobs. Every active opening in Ashby appears in Wonka, with role details preserved.
  • Candidates. Every applicant on every job, with their full application data.
  • CVs. Resumes are attached to each candidate record so you have full context.

After candidates complete an assessment, you review the AI ranking inside Wonka and then move them forward in Ashby right from your Wonka account. Many teams actually prefer this — the human-in-the-loop step is the moment where judgment happens, and forcing it keeps the AI from accumulating unreviewed authority over your pipeline.

Building Your First Assessment

After the connection completes and you finish the standard Wonka onboarding (email, company, name), your Ashby workspace is live inside Wonka.

Open any imported application — application details come through accurately, so the candidate record looks like what you expect from Ashby, just inside Wonka's screening UI.

Now build the assessment. Inside Wonka, you can:

  • Mix question formats. Video responses, open-text, multiple-choice, and live coding challenges in a single assessment. Most screening tools lock you into one format. Wonka doesn't.
  • Generate questions with Wonka AI. Paste the job description, get a draft set of questions tuned to the role. Edit anything you don't like.
  • Or write them yourself. Manual question building works exactly the way you'd expect — no template lock-in.

Save the assessment when it's ready. You can reuse it across multiple Ashby jobs or build a different one per role. There's no per-assessment fee.

Screening Candidates From the Ashby Pipeline

Open the Candidates page in Wonka. You'll see the full Ashby candidate list, with CVs attached. Filter by job, stage, or any field that came through with the sync. Select the candidates you want to screen.

Share the assessment via link. Candidates complete it on their own time, in their own timezone, on whatever device they have. No scheduling. No coordination across half a planet's worth of calendars.

When candidates submit, they appear in the Screening tab under Awaiting Analysis.

What the AI Actually Tells You

Click Analyze Candidates. Wonka's AI processes every submission and returns three things:

  1. A ranked candidate list, sorted by overall fit for the role.
  2. A score per candidate, broken out across the dimensions you assessed.
  3. AI feedback on each candidate and each answer, so you can see why someone scored the way they did.

That third one matters more than people realize. The risk with AI scoring is the black box — a number drops out, and you have no way to interrogate it. Wonka's per-answer feedback gives you the reasoning, which means you can audit, override, or recalibrate. The AI is a filter and an explainer, not a judge.

Use the ranked list to decide who to move forward. Then go back to Ashby and progress them through your normal pipeline.

What Changes for Your Recruiters

Concrete before-and-after, based on how teams using both systems describe their workflow.

Before:

  • Candidate applies in Ashby.

The Ashby integration itself costs nothing. There's no premium tier to unlock it. If you're on Ashby and you want AI screening, you connect with the ATS ID, and you're charged only for candidates you actually screen.

This pricing model exists because most screening tools charge by seat or annual contract, which incentivizes them to add complexity and lock-in. Wonka's incentive is to make screening so good per candidate that you keep choosing to use it. We think that's the right alignment.

FAQ

Does the integration require engineering work? No. The ATS ID handshake is two copy-paste steps. No code. Most non-technical recruiters complete the setup in under three minutes.

How is candidate data handled? Wonka is SOC 2 Type II compliant and GDPR-ready. Data is encrypted at rest and in transit, and candidate data is never shared with third parties. Full details in the privacy policy.
